From Darkness to Light:

DC Smith’s Journey

DC Smith is the visionary author of The Apocalypse Game series, a high-concept Techno-Supernatural Thriller that doesn’t just predict the future (accurately, so far)—it lays bare the terrifying forces shaping it.

With a 25-year career as a CEO and strategist in broadband wireless and defense technologies, Smith’s expertise was forged in the crucible of innovation. As a leader for companies like Ericsson and Oceus Networks, and a seasoned public speaker at investment conferences, company events, and industry meetings, with unparalleled authority, he navigates the complex interplay of emerging technology and global power influenced by supernatural forces.

The genesis of The Apocalypse Game is itself prescient. Smith began outlining the series in 2007, with full-time writing commenced in 2016. By 2017, his plot had chillingly anticipated the mounting attacks on Christianity; the subsequent rise of today’s limited AI; the global plague(COVID-19); and war in Europe.

Now, through The Apocalypse Game, Smith reveals the next terrifying chapters for humanity: a worsening global plague of suicides and murder; deep economic pain from spreading use of AI; the development of genetic tools to increase human lifespan; the unleashing of synthetic biology to create advantage; and a devastating global war with the evil axis. At the heart of the tale is Hela: the first sentient AI destined to become the focal point of a new and dangerous religion—enabling the rise of the Antichrist in an age desperate for meaning.

Yet, beyond the harrowing predictions and thrilling, rollicking action, Smith is driven by a profound personal mission. A direct descendant of the Swedish legend, Englebrekt Englebrektsson (whose immigrant ancestor Hans Smith, a blacksmith, hence the name change, arrived in 1861), Doug has long harbored a vow to do good. This commitment extends to ministering to the sick and, remarkably, donating over thirty gallons of a rare blood that is credited with saving the lives of over 2,000 newborn babies.

As a member of the International Thriller Writers, inspired by the high-stakes, good vs. evil narratives of Stephen King and James Rollins and others, DC Smith crafts a rollicking adventure that doesn’t just entertain. While there is still time, it encourages the reader to think deeply about the clash between modern values, faith, science, and the very nature of humanity, daring them to confront a future that might already be upon us.

He lives in Fairhope, Alabama, with his wife, Angela, where he is full-time dedicated to writing a series that is not merely fiction, but an urgent, gripping warning for our times.

— A New Name —

With the new release of the book series, I choose to write under a pen name: Englebrektsson. Why? One might reasonably ask. Especially since I originally launched it under my own name, DC Smith. The answer comes in two parts: First, if one Googles “DC Smith books” you’ll first find dozens of references to Peter Grainger's crime series, which features a detective named DC Smith. There are 17 of those novels at last count. As a newer author, that makes me nearly impossible to find.

Second — and more importantly — when I wrote the original The Apocalypse Game, Book One, I had done a great deal of research on fiction writing, but the book was largely written by the seat of my pants. I knew it could be stronger, more memorable, and more meaningful, but after more than a dozen rewrites, I couldn't figure out how. So I published it anyway.

The pseudonym Englebrektsson comes from my own family's history. On my father's side, Ingrid and Hans came through Ellis Island in 1861. As the family story goes, Hans was a blacksmith who spoke no English, and immigration officials simply assigned him the surname Smith. The story passed down through generations tells a different story: our family name, as it was in Sweden, should have been Englebrektsson — a rare and storied name there, belonging to a medieval leader who rallied an army, drove the Danes out of Sweden, and helped forge the nation as we know it today.

Not a bad name to carry. And I think it looks pretty great on a book cover, too — with zero Google search conflicts.
